A Letter from Stacey

Hi there!

My name is Stacey Scannell, and I’ve been the proud owner of The Soap Opera since 2016. I purchased the business as an enthusiastic customer from Chuck Bauer and Chuck Beckwith that year, but we can dive into that later. First, let me help you get to know me a little better. :)

I wear many hats beyond owning The Soap Opera: I'm a mom to two amazing kiddos and two silly cats, a partner, a friend, a community supporter, an economic development board member advocating for small businesses, an environmental/human rights/animal rights advocate, a fitness/beauty/nutrition enthusiast, and an empathetic, ADHD jack-of-all-trades kind of woman. I care deeply about the world we live in and do all I can to leave it in the best possible condition for future generations.

When I purchased The Soap Opera, I made it my mission to personally review every product we carried for quality. Each ingredient label is carefully read and scrutinized. If a product doesn’t meet our standards, it’s either never brought in or is discontinued—because you deserve the best for your skin (which is, after all, your body’s largest organ!). Every product in our store is hand-selected, so whether you're shopping in person or online, you can trust that it’s been vetted for quality, saving you the guesswork. And we price match to ensure your skincare and grooming routine doesn’t break the bank!

Our Soap Opera House Line is one of my “babies.” These products are not only packed with ingredients your skin will love, but they also come in eco-friendly packaging! As a passionate environmental advocate, I prioritized shifting away from non-recyclable plastics. In 2020, during the lockdown, I achieved a full transition to more sustainable materials like biodegradable wheat straw, glass, and aluminum. The products all start unscented to meet your sensitive skin care needs, but we offer complimentary custom scenting using our natural essential and perfume oils.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. I grew up on farms caring for animals and plants, definitely a bit of a tomboy. That upbringing led me to Madison, Wisconsin, where I studied Recreation and Tourism Management, along with Business Management. During college, I worked just about every job under the sun: childcare, barista, bartender, even professional whitewater kayaker! Eventually, I spent around 10 years managing and opening fitness studios, and absolutely loved helping people thrive in that space.

When I became pregnant with my first child in 2014, I knew it was time for a shift. I was ready to own something of my own. When I learned that Chuck and Chuck were looking to retire, I jumped at the opportunity. As someone who had struggled with acne before discovering their incredible organic products, I didn’t just believe in this business, I adored it. I worked closely with them before and after the sale to ensure a smooth transition. My goal was to preserve what made the store so special, while also adding my own personal touch.

Since becoming the owner of The Soap Opera, I’ve joined two downtown Madison boards as secretary: the Greater State Street Business Association (GSSBA) and the Downtown Madison Business Improvement District (BID). I’ve lived in Madison since the early 2000s, and I’m passionate about seeing this community flourish with unique shops and restaurants. Small businesses like ours need a voice to help ensure downtown continues to thrive, and I’m proud to be part of that voice.

Anyway, that’s a little about me! Thank you so much for supporting The Soap Opera. When you shop small, your dollars go to the right places: our amazing staff, ethical vendors, nonprofit organizations, and the community we love.

Thank you for shopping small!
