A warm spicy holiday tradition brought right into your home in a gorgeous sachet, our mulling spices are made with Cinnamon, Orange Peel, Allspice and Cloves. Best served in warm cider or wine, but can also be brewed in warm water as loose leaf tea. Or simply simmer in water to let off a beautifully spicy fragrance in your home.

The History of Mulling Spices 

The use of mulling spices first began in the 2nd century, when the Romans began spicing and heating their wine as they traveled across the European continent, trading and conquering. While the exact combination of spices may vary, mulling spices are typically composed of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice, and may also contain bits of dried fruit.

As the Romans continued to travel throughout Europe, their love for mulled wine began to spread across the continent, particularly in northern European countries. Mulled beverages became especially popular during the Middle Ages, when people used them to stay warm during the harsh winters. A type of mulled cider called “wassail” became especially popular in Germany and England during this period of time, and was used in a number of harvest drinking rituals.

Over the years, mulling spices made their way into a variety of other warm beverages, and began to be associated with the autumn and winter seasons. Today, mulling spices are most commonly used in festive winter beverages like mulled wine, cider, and tea.

The Soap Opera’s Four Thieves Essential Oil Blend is made from a rich and spicy blend of Clove, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Cinnamon.

Why “Four Thieves”? The name comes from a story that takes place during the time the Black Plague swept over Europe. As people began to succumb to the plague, four spice traders decided that it would be more profitable to loot the homes and bodies of the victims than to stick with their day jobs. They believed that so long as they breathed in certain spices, they would be protected from the miasma of illness and could loot to their heart’s content. They were largely successful, until the king had them captured and kindly offered to not burn them at the stake if they shared their secret blend of herbs and spices, of which they promptly divulged.

In modern aromatherapy, the Four Thieves blend is commonly used to kill airborne bacteria and to stimulate the immune system.

Uses: 

Antibacterial: Spray in the air or on surfaces in the house, yogo mat, car, and more for a natural alternative to traditional cleaners.

The Soap Opera Soothing Eye Pillows are made by one of the owner’s mothers right here in Wisconsin, with a lot of love and over 60 years of experience! These eye pillows are filled with flax seed so it forms around the eye area easily. 

They can be used to help with relaxation, sleep, or sore muscles.  Lay down and place over the eye area to block out access light to help you relax and slumber.  The scent of lavender is especially relaxing and known to help promote sleep.

Stick in the freezer for a minimum of 10 minutes to then place on a sore muscle to cool the area for instant relief and reduce swelling. You may also place in the microwave for 10 seconds to add a little heat to a sore area of the body.  Don’t put in the microwave for too long however. With the flax seed it can cook! You don’t want that :).

They come in many different patterns and two fabrics.  The 2 fabric choices are silk or cotton. If you would like a specific fabric or pattern please write it in the comments before check out.  We will do our best to get you what you are looking for - the fabrics vary! This is the perfect gift for anyone including yourself!

Kesichev Farm raises goats in a small town called New Glarus in southern Wisconsin. They have a tiny herd of Mini Nubian goats who provide the milk we use in their handmade soap. They make everything in small batches and with great care.
