Essential oils are the foundation of Aromatherapy. True essential oils— the concentrated aromatic oils of herbs, fruits and flowers—have been used for centuries in foods, cosmetics, aromatherapy and medicinal preparations.
True essential oils are distilled from plant leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, barks and resins, or are expressed from the rinds of citrus fruits. It generally takes at least 50 pounds of plant material to make one pound of essential oil. For example, one pound of rosemary oil requires 66 pounds of herb. However, some oils require a much higher amount of plant or floral material. It takes 2,300 pounds of rose flowers to make a single pound of oil!
